To say Richard and I were friends would be an understatement , we were more like brothers. My Mom, Freida or "Freidy" as he called her, loved him. We grew up at each others houses. Mine, a loved filled house but not much else, his, to me a mansion, filled with love also. This is a testemant to the man, it didn't matter what your circumstances were, if he liked you, that was all that mattered.
His yard was my playground, trying to pole vault using a big Bamboo pole along side him and Gene Crouch. I never got the hang of it. He had a motorized lawn mower I would help him by clearing the path of walnuts in the fall, One fall we found a partialy full box of 22 cal. rounds and decided to throw them into a pile of burning leaves. Wqnder we were not killed . We hid behind the big walnut trees in his yard. Richard being smarter than me escaped un-scathed. I poked my head around to watch the explosions only to get grazed in the forehead by a bullet. I lived a block and a half away at that time. My sister Charlotte put a bandage around my head , that looked like a turbin. I have quite a few more stories and they all involve my side-kick Richard. I was blessed to have him as a friend. I hope you all have a special "buddy" in your lives to share the journey.
