I served in the military for 25 years and James never once mentioned to me that he had served in the United States Marine Corps. While going through his things I found his Honorable Discharge Papers from the Marine Corps. I just want to light this candle for you, Private James Lee Payne, US Marine Corps, and Than You for Serving. Michael Douglas Brewer, LTC, USA, (Ret.)

My great Grandfather Payne, was a hard working man. Most all the memories i have of him were at his shop, his place of business. everytime id go there i would want to drive his golf cart around and for some reason no one had a problem with me (a 5 year old at first) driving around in a golf cart. I also remember him teaching me how to drive a tractor at a very early age as well, if not for him i would have never had those experiences and i thank him for all of them. i will always remember and cherish those times spent around him. May my Grandfather rest in peace.

Rachel Anne (Brewer) Morris - Granddaughter of James Payne and Betty (Brewer)Payne
One of my fondest childhood memories was going to my Grandpa Payne's Implement Company after school with my sister to play School or office with the big chalk board and my grandma's shoulder padded phone , hide and seek in the Giant tractor tires, collecting persimmons, or riding the 4 wheeler. There was always a Nehi grape soda, a snickers bar waiting for me and a friendly smile from my Grandpa. I love to this day the smell of , fresh baked bread , fried chicken mixed with bolts , screws, tires and gas. My Grandpa Payne was not my Grandmas first husband nor My only Grandpa, But i give a lot of credit to him for saving my Grandmas life. My grandma struggled with alcoholism and was not the easiest person to get along with , I believe marrying James was the best thing she ever did aside from giving birth to my Dad. They worked together running the Shop and being there for myself , my sisters and my cousin Amy as both Grand parents and parental fixtures. It made me so very sad that after their long relationship and all their hard work their lives would end not knowing who each other were. My Grandpa died last week due to complications of Dementia and My grandma is in a nursing home awaiting the same fate. My Grandpa was a smart man, a strong man and and a frugal man . He loved my grandma and did right by her the very best he could. Where ever he is I hope he has a Big Orange Tractor and some Large Ripe Tomatoes . "On it."
