My brother and I were students of ‘Miss Stevens’ in the early 1960s, literally from our initial introduction to our instruments through our first four years of development and concert band performances. We were both privileged to have been under her instruction. Miss Stevens was an exemplary teacher who touched countless lives over the course of her career. Words like competent, enthusiastic, creative, and dedicated come to mind. My memories are of a person who truly loved working with young people, bringing out the best in them, and instilling enthusiasm for making music. Her talent and capability as a musician were inspiring. As a special project during my 8th grade year she worked with me and two other trumpeters on a trio of ‘Bugler’s Holiday’ (which received rave reviews from the school community after our spring concert). As a reward for our work, she got us tickets to the Marin Symphony where she was Principle Oboist. In addition to the piccolo trumpet solos that she wanted us to hear, we heard her perform a number of sweet, flawless oboe solos in the course of the evening. Miss Stevens, thank you for enriching the life experience of me and so many others.
