William Jay Hensley lost a 14-year battle with cancer on December 7, 2010, at the age of 75. He is survived by his wife Betty, son Mark, sister Betty Ellen McGary, and brother Oliver Hensley. He was predeceased by his brother Jim, and sister Josephine.
Bill was born in Couch, Missouri, to William Calvin and Lois Rosetta Hensley on July 23, 1935. He graduated from Couch High School in 1953, and served in the U. S. Army from 1955 to 1957. He married Betty on October 5, 1957, and they moved to Springfield in 1959 where he joined the Springfield Police Department. He earned a degree in criminal justice from Drury University, and graduated from the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia. He retired from the Police Department in January of 1991 with the rank of Major. His favorite hobbies were fishing and playing golf with his friends.
Funeral services will be held at Wesley United Methodist Church on Friday, December 10, at 2:00 PM, with visitation prior to the funeral starting at 12:30. Burial will be in Rivermonte Memorial Gardens under the care of Herman H. Lohmeyer Funeral Home.
