Vernon Cashel

Vernon F. Cashel, age 93, of Springfield, MO, passed away at home on Monday, December 17, 2018.

Vern was born and raised in St. Louis, MO, the eldest of four brothers who have preceded him in death. Vern grew up in South St. Louis, where he attended Southside Catholic High School. He served in the Navy in WWII where he was stationed in the Pacific Islands. Shortly after his return, he married Ann (Hulahan), the love of his life, and together they raised five children. He spent the majority of his professional life working for the Frisco RR. Upon his retirement, he dedicated his life to the Springfield community, working for Drury University and SMSU and volunteering with Hospice, RSVP Reading Buddies, and Friends of the Library.

Vern’s enthusiasm for baseball began as a child belonging to the St. Louis Cardinal’s original “Knot Hole Gang” and continued throughout his life. He cherished his long runs and his walks with Bo (his best dog friend). His life was enriched by his faith, many friends, vast reading interests, and grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

The impact of Vern’s life will live on through his wife, Ann, of 71 years, his five children, Mike (Eraina) Cashel, Dan Cashel, Therese (Larry) Miller, Eileen (Shelby) Hampton, and JoAnne (Scott) Bailes. Vern will also be lovingly remembered by his nine grandchildren, Matt Cashel, Chelsey Cashel, Malorie (Jon) Marrs, Becca (Kevin) Hogg, Scott Miller, Kevin (Sarah) Miller, Alli (Luke) Miller, Tara (Nathan) Saxby, Mandy Bailes and his great grandchildren Kate and Emma Hogg, Aiden Hampton, and Maren Miller.

The visitation will be held at Herman Lohmeyer Funeral Home from 5-7 p.m., on Thursday, December 20th. The Celebration of Life Mass will be held on Friday, December 21st at 9 a.m. at Holy Trinity Catholic Church. Burial will be at noon at Missouri Veterans Cemetery.

The family gives special thanks to the many healthcare professionals, neighbors, and friends who provided endless support and compassion through the final days of Vern’s life.

Memorial donations may be made to The Kitchen, 1630 N. Jefferson Ave., or Springfield Catholic Schools, 2340 S. Eastgate.
