Reverend Theodore James Massey, known to family and friends as Jim, or the Rev, was born on April 16, 1944 to Lee Roy and Cora Jewell (Davidson) Massey in Hobbs, New Mexico. He passed away Wednesday, February 4, 2015, in Springfield, Missouri.
Gifted with a beautiful singing voice by God, he sang at local churches in his home town of Eunice, NM. He proudly served in the Army as Chaplain’s Assistant during the Vietnam War. After his service, he earned his Master’s Degree in Theology from SMU in 1981, and he became a fully ordained Methodist minister in 1983. He faithfully served various churches in the New Mexico Conference for 30 years. Like all ministers, he never really retired, serving part-time as an older adult minister at Wesley United Methodist Church in Springfield.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Robert Weldon Massey; his sisters, Jewell Ellen Belle Massey and Nelda Estelene Bennett.
Reverend Massey is survived by his angel of 39 years, Charlotte Massey; his daughters, Teresa (Buddy) Watson of Waxachie, TX, Melody Massey of Midland, TX; a grandson, James Charles Massey-Burns of Springfield; a brother, Roy Massey of Fresno, CA; sisters-in-law, Cathy Massey of Fresno, CA and Dorthy Massey of Duncanville, TX; several nieces and nephews, and friends all over the world. He touched everyone’s lives through his faith, his smile, his beautiful singing voice and his endless love.
Memorial services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, February 7, 2015 in Wesley United Methodist Church, 922 W. Republic Road, with Pastor Scott Bailey-Kirk officiating. A memorial visitation will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. prior to the service in the church.
Committal service with Military Honors will be at 10:00 a.m., Monday, February 9, 2015 in Missouri Veterans Cemetery under the care of Herman Lohmeyer Funeral Home.
