Sheila Bowles

Sheila S. Bowles, 65, Springfield, passed away Sunday December 12, 2010 at Select Specialty Hospital.

She was born January 6, 1945 in Washington, D.C. to Robert F. and Eleanor J. (Jewell) Byrnes.

Sheila lived a life which made her family and friends proud of her. She was thankful to come from a large and loving family, and felt privileged to pass along the ideals of her parents to her children. She was most happy to see her children grow to become happy adults with beautiful families. She never tired of talking about her grandchildren. Throughout her life, she never stopped being the best mother and wife. Outside of her family, Sheila was a tireless friend, crafty artist, advocate for children, and energetic self-improver. She was grateful to have received a liver transplant sixteen years ago, and she never stopped loving life or fighting to live the life she wanted. She was loved and will be dearly missed by those who were fortunate to call her wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and friend.

Sheila received her Bachelors of Science in Nursing from Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. She was a childbirth educator for over 30 years, serving her last 18 years with the Teddy Bear Club at St. John's Hospital. She was a fellow of the American College of Childbirth Educators of Lamaze International and a teacher for the American Society for Psychoprophylaxis in Obstetrics. She was a former Casa volunteer, and served on local and professional committees as a volunteer.

Sheila was preceded in death by her father, Robert Byrnes.

She is survived by her loving husband, Ken Bowles, and their children, Robert Bowles, Charles Bowles II, Katherine Rinkes, and Amy Guffey; and her grandchildren, Owen Guffey, Aubrey Guffey, Jasper Bowles, and Nathan Rinkes; her mother, Eleanor Byrnes; siblings, Shaun Byrnes, twin sister Sally Neylon, Susan Wallace, Robin Huntington, Charles Byrnes, and James Byrnes; and many other family members and friends.

Funeral Mass will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, December 18 in Holy Trinity Catholic Church with Father Fergus Monaghan, Celebrant.
