Samuel Henry Vienhage, Jr., 86, Springfield, died peacefully at his home on Sunday, September 7, 2008.

Sam was born on November 1, 1921 in Springfield to Samuel and Rose Vienhage. He was a graduate of Saint Agnes High School, attended SMS, and was a lifelong member of Saint Agnes Cathedral. He joined his father and two brothers working in the family business founded by his father. He was a member of the Bel-Air, Starlight Debonnaires, and Beaux Belles dance clubs. Following retirement, he devoted himself to giving loving care for his wife, Amy. Sam was a true gentleman and devoted family man. His warmth, compassion, good-heartedness, love of family, and special fondness for sweets and ballroom dancing will be remembered well. He always greeted everyone with a strong handshake and a warm, welcoming smile.



He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Imelda "Amy" Vienhage; a son, John Joseph; a brother and sister-in-law, Charles and Joan Vienhage; a sister, Sr. Rose Ann Vienhage; a sister and brother-in-law, Maxine and Buford Cheek; a brother-in-law, Casey Gregory; and son-in-law, Tom Weiss.

He is survived by his sister, Mary Louise Gregory; brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Joan Vienhage; son, Samuel Alan Vienhage; three daughters, Julie Weiss, Nancy Petersen and husband Joe, and Linda Cosgrove and husband, Dan; grandchildren, Hanna, Amy, Erin, Victor and Lana; cousins, nieces, nephews and grand-nieces and -nephews.



Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, September 10, 2008 in Saint Agnes Cathedral with Fr. Mike McDevitt celebrant. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery under the care of Herman H. Lohmeyer Funeral Home, 500 E. Walnut.

Visitation will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home, with rosary and prayer service starting at 7:30.

The family wishes to thank Dad's devoted caregivers, Rosie Fellin, Stacy Howell and Barbara Rivera.
