Ruth Pettis

Ruth Viola Pettis was born October 7, 1921 in Kaw City, Oklahoma to Claud and Alvina (Thorman) Carr. In 1936 the family moved to Arkansas City, Kansas where she grew to adulthood.

On April 28, 1946 she married Richard Pettis, when he returned from military service in the Second World War. This union lasted 61 years until Richard’s passing on June 2, 2007.
Richard was employed in the oil industry and spent his adult life working in that field in Illinois and Louisiana.

Ruth accepted Jesus Christ as her Savior at an early age and she and her husband were very active in church work. When employment required relocation, they immediately found a church home, and continued to faithfully serve the Lord. Ruth taught junior girls in Sunday school for many years. At the time of her passing, she was a member of Grace Assembly of God in Springfield, MO.

Ruth was a great cook, and loved to share her pecan pies and other items of her culinary art with family, friends and neighbors. She never met a stranger.
One of the things for which she will be remembered is sending greeting cards to her long list of family and friends. This included birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, graduation, all holidays, and cards to bring cheer, or just to say “Hello.” She never seemed to forget a friend, and because she kept in touch by cards, notes and telephone, she will be sorely missed.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents, Claud and Alvina Carr, and by her husband, Richard.
She is survived by her sister, Lola Franklin of Springfield, with whom she resided the past four years, and by her brother, Rev. Owen Carr and his wife, Norma Lee of Springfield, as well as numerous nephews and nieces.

Visitation for Ruth will be at the Herman Lohmeyer Funeral Home, 500 East Walnut Street, Springfield, Missouri 10 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. Tuesday May 19, 2015 with her memorial service immediately following. Reverends Owen Carr and David Carr will officiate.

Funeral services will be held at the Hall Funeral Chapel, 1110 North 4th Street, in Effingham, Illinois at 10:30 a.m. Thursday May 21, 2015 with the Reverend Owen Carr officiating. Visitation will be thirty minutes prior to the service. Burial will be in the Altamont Union Cemetery in Altamont, Illinois.

The family wishes to express sincere appreciation to nurses, Becky Long and Ashley Winder and the staff of Regional Hospice Care for their kind, capable and compassionate care during these difficult days. They professionally and tenderly walked with us these last miles through "the valley of the shadow of death."
