Phillip Leon Roper, 89, of Springfield, MO, passed away Wednesday June 30, 2010 to be with his beloved Maola McGinnis Roper.
He served in the U.S Army during the Second World War, and graduated first in a class of four hundred from the U.S. Army's Adjutant General's School. While in California, he lived with his uncle Frank Willard who created the comic script Moon Mullins. During this time he enjoyed the company of the elite society of Hollywood, and one of his fondest memories was playing catch with Babe Ruth. During World War II, he worked as a draftsman and engineer for Consolidated Aircraft Corporation and helped design the PBY-5 flying boats. Later he worked as an engineer at Lockheed Aircraft.
In his early life he was a member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce. He was currently a member of the International Society for Philosophical Enquiry (ISPE), and Mensa. A member of The Better Business Bureau for over 20 years (Chairman of the board for 10), he also served on the Drury University Board of Trustees for 34 years, as Vice-Chair and on the Executive Committee. He served on many other boards of directors.
Over the past 60 years, his business, Roper Electric Company, has played an important role in the growth of Springfield. He was very proud of his accomplishments, and was a long-time honest and successful businessman. Phillip was a man of vast knowledge and a thirst for information. He toyed with language and loved a good joke. He kept himself fit of mind and had many special friends in weekly discussion groups.
He is survived by wife Blanca Erlinda Roper, his brother Max Roper, his sister Martha Ann Smith, sister-in-law Mary Roper, and all his relatives and friends, especially Jim Craig.
Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday July 2, 2010 in Holy Trinity Catholic Church with Father Fergus Monaghan celebrant. Burial will be in Maple Park Cemetery, under the care of Herman H. Lohmeyer Funeral Home, 500 E. Walnut St.
There is no visitation planned.
