Nelson "Ken" Dougherty

Nelson Kenneth "Ken" Dougherty, age 72, of Nixa, Missouri passed away peacefully on Saturday October 16, 2010 at St. John's Hospital surrounded by his loving wife and children, after his ten year battle with cancer. Ken was born on January 4, 1938 in St. Louis, Mo. to Nelson and Velma Dougherty.

Ken leaves his wife of 20 years Lizabeth, his children Amy Thoren, Timothy and his wife Angie, Alison and her husband Lawrence and Lyndsey; his sister Patricia Beiter and husband Norman and brother James and his wife Dale. Papa's amazing grandchildren are Ambur, Hailey, Dylan, Courtney, Brooke, Alexa, Maya and Isabel whom he loved dearly, along with numerous nieces, nephews, extended family and many close friends. Ken is also survived by his first wife Elizabeth Krohn. He was preceded in death by his parents and his nephew Jimmy Dougherty.

He served his country in the US Navy from 1956 to 1960. Ken was an honors business graduate from Washington University. Ken earned his father's job at Monsanto and was later employed by Quaker Oats, Miller Brewing Company and finally self employed.

In retirement Ken enjoyed his family, restoring his beloved 1963 VW and his storytelling. He appreciated every day and always remained steadfast in his faith. His dry and witty sense of humor and warm and crooked smile will not be forgotten. Ken was the glue that held his family together, and he has left our hearts forever changed.

The Dougherty Family would like to give special and sincere thanks to the nursing staff on 7D at St. John's for the compassionate care he received during his last illness, especially Amanda, Latoya, Cheryl and Jill; and Dr. Lavanya Tiriveedhi for her extraordinary compassion.

Funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday on October 20, 2010 in St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church. Burial with military honors will follow in Missouri Veterans Cemetery under the care of Herman Lohmeyer Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 6 pm to 8 pm Tuesday in the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Ken's memory to the St. Jude's Affiliate at St. John's Hospital 1235 E. Cherokee Springfield, MO 65804 or the Ronald McDonald House 949 E. Primrose Springfield, MO 65807.
