On January 2nd, 2023, Meredith Blake Lentz Adams passed peacefully after a short illness. .Meredith was born on July 26th, 1938, to William Blake and Edith (Grubb) Lentz in Ashville, NC. The family moved from Ashville to Greensboro and finally to Raleigh, NC as Meredith’s father was promoted in the North Carolina Highway Patrol.

Meredith attended the University of North Carolina at Greensboro where she graduated Phi Beta Kappa. She received a Southern Fellowship, with which she undertook graduate studies in European history at the University of Texas at Austin. Meredith was also awarded a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship in support of her graduate work. It was at UT that Meredith met the love of her life, David Adams. David and Meredith were married in 1961.

In 1965-1966, Meredith accompanied David to Mexico while he continued his research in Latin American history, which inspired a love for travel with would take her to various parts of the United States and Western and Central Europe.

Meredith and David moved to Springfield, MO in 1966 to teach history at what became Missouri State University. Meredith taught German, Russian and Holocaust history as well as Western Civilization. She created a course in History of Women in Western Civilization and helped to develop the Woman’s Studies program. Meredith submitted a monograph, Murder and Martial Justice, about German prisoners of war in the United States during World War II, after years of extensive research.

Meredith is survived by her husband David, their daughters Mariya and Jessica, four grandchildren, a great-grandchild, as well as a niece. Meredith was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Carolyn and a niece and nephew.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 11:00am Wednesday, January 18, 2023 at Messiah Lutheran Church, 925 E. Seminole Street in Sprinfield, Missouri under the care and direction of Herman H. Lohmeyer Funeral Home.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Messiah Lutheran Church or a charity of your choice. The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses at Mercy for their excellent care during Meredith’s illness.
