Melvin Eugene Wilkins, 92 of Springfield, Missouri passed away on Saturday, September 3, 2011 in Mercy Villa Care Facility.

Melvin was born July 22, 1919 in Salida, Colorado to Henry Edward and Irene (Copeland) Wilkins. He served in the U.S. Marines during WWII.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Frank Edward, his sisters, Vervine Wilkins, Ferne and her husband, Marcus Hamm.

Melvin is survived by his wife of 65 years, Elsie P. Wilkins; his nephew, Ed Hamm of Sarocoxie, Missouri and his niece, Beverly Wheeler of Casper, Wyoming.

Melvin spent his working years in Springfield, as the owner and operator of the “Springfield Hearing Aid Center". He was a public servant to all who knew him, paying special attention to the children who came to him each year for their hearing tests. These special children would bring their class pictures to him and each year he would watch them grow. Seniors were also a big part of Melvin’s business. Appreciating their happiness as he helped them with being able to hear a little better.

A man of many talents, he was an avid golfer, and built his own golf clubs. He was an avid fisherman and designed his own fishing poles. He will be truly missed by all who knew him.

Graveside service with military honors will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday September 6, 2011 in White Chapel Memorial Gardens 5234 State Highway EE (Division) with Fr. Denis Dougherty, O.S.B. officiating under the care of Herman H. Lohmeyer Funeral Home. No visitation is planned.
