Mary Louise Stoke, of Springfield, passed away on on October 15, 2007, at the age of 94. She was the daughter of Joseph B. Hilton, Sr., and Mary L. Rafferty Hilton. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Harry; her brother, Joseph B. Hilton, Jr.; and her son, David, and his wife, Myra.
Her son, Phillip, also of Springfield, and her daughter and son-in-law, Linda and Gene Fuller, of Warrensburg, Mo. survive. Also surviving her are ten grandchildren Mary Elizabeth, Timothy, and Christopher Stoke, Scott Johnson and partner Chuck Meltzer, Matthew Johnson and partner Ken Holder, Bart Fuller and wife Jan, Michelle Stockman, Michael Stoke and wife Teresa, Sarah Waters and husband Brett, and Jessica Stoke, and four great-grandchildren Erika and Brandon Stockman, Christy and Jason Stoke, and Cole Waters; and a brother-in-law, Vergil Slee, and several nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Louise, as she liked to be called, was born in Springfield, Jan. 28, 1913, but moved with her family to St. Louis when she was a small child. She received her education while in St. Louis, graduating from Roosevelt High School in 1930. Shortly after that, her family moved back to Springfield where she attended St. John's School of Nursing, graduating in 1936. She was employed as a registered nurse until she started her family after which time she devoted her time to her family. After raising her family, she returned to nursing working in the nursery at St. John's Hospital for a short time.
She was a long time member of St. Paul United Methodist Church where she sang in the choir and held several offices in the United Methodist Women. She also worked with the Meals on Wheels at Cox North, starting out delivering meals and then was later joined by her husband after his retirement, and finally working in the office helping with menus.
Funeral services will be held at St. Paul United Methodist Church, Walnut and Jefferson, at 11:00 a.m. on October 18, 2007. Visitation will be in the Walker Parlor at St. Paul before the service. Burial will be in Maple Park Cemetery next to her husband. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to Community Hospices of America, Wedding Ring Scholarship Fund, or your favorite charity. Herman H. Lohmeyer Funeral Home will be in charge of the arrangements.
