Mary Kay Carson, age 61, passed away Sunday, January 10th following a long battle with cancer. Mary Kay was born May 26, 1948 to Walter and Alta (Blankenship) Holman. She grew up in Mountain Grove, Mo. and later made her home in Springfield, Mo. It was there that she met and married Richard E. Carson. They were married on April 4, 1986. She was a member of St. Agnes Cathedral Parish.

Mary Kay was a classroom teacher from 1970 to 1979 in Jefferson City, Columbia and Willard, MO. She was employed by Springfield Public Schools since August of 1979 and served as a school librarian for the district until 1986. During that time she completed her Master's Degree's in Education and Library Science.

In 1986 Mary Kay took the position of Library Media Coordinator and served in that capacity. In 2001 Mary Kay was diagnosed with primary peritoneal cancer. In July of that year she retired from her full-time position, but continued all of her Library Coordinator responsibilities working in a part-time capacity until her death.

Mary Kay was very passionate about the library program, She was a pioneer in bringing school library software into the program helping to build one of the premier public school library programs in the state.

Mary Kay was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Alta (Blankenship) Holman. She is survived by her husband, Richard E. Carson of Springfield, MO; three sisters, Barbara G. Pedersen and her husband, Herbert of Duncanville, TX, Sue A. Craig and her husband, Robert of Blue Springs, MO, and Marjorie L. Waara and her husband Jeffrey of Mountain Grove, MO; She has been a loving mother to many cats. She has two god children, 33 nieces and nephews and 42 great nieces and nephews.

Funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, 2010 in St. Agnes Cathedral with Fr. Tom Kiefer celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery under the care of Herman H. Lohmeyer Funeral Home. Wake services will be at 7:30 p.m. Friday with visitation to follow all in the church.
