Lonnie R. Whelan, age 69 of Osceola MO. passed away Saturday afternoon April 2, 2011 at Cox hospital in Springfield surrounded by his loving family.
Lon was born August 14, 1941 in Harlan Iowa to Raymond and Zoe (Fish) Whelan. Lon grew up and went to school in the Harlan and Dunlap Iowa areas. He graduated High School in Dunlap Iowa in 1959. He joined the Marine Corps in 1960-1964. He married Janice (Horst) in May of 1999. He was preceded in death by his father, and his step-father, Cless Kibby, and infant baby sister Kyla Kibby.
He is survived by his wife, Janice, step children Kevin Kobs and wife Sheril, Keith Kobs and wife Cindy, Kim Kobs, Angela Miller, and Kathy McTwiggan. One son, Lonnie Whelan and wife Ann-Margaret, 3 grandchildren, Carly, Nick, and Ryann in San Clemente, CA. He also had 4 step-children by a previous marriage that was very special to him, Yvette, Donnie, Kathy, and Jeff Obara. 9 step-grandchildren, April, Mikayla, Amber, Amy, Bubby, Aaron, Austin, Sarah, and Heather. 9 step-great-grandchildren, Alex, Ellie, Isabella, Caiden, Jaelyn, Jordan, Damien, David, and Dalton; also survived by his mother Zoe Kibby of Dunlap Iowa, his sister Keva Soma and her husband Les of Dunlap Iowa, his brothers Kevin Kibby of Osceola MO and Kelly Kibby and wife Toni of Westside Iowa and many nieces, nephews and extended family.
Lon retired in 2007 from many years in the trucking industry. In 2008 he began driving the school bus for the Osecola school system and continued until his illness. He was a member of the local V.F.W. and the American Legion. He loved hunting and fishing and made many friends along the way. In January 2010 he took Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and was baptized at the Dunnegan Baptist Church on April 25, 2010.
Memorial services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday April 8, 2011 in the Dunnegan Bible Baptist church in Dunnegan MO. Burial will be at a later date at the Graceland Cemetery in Avoca, Iowa. Everone is welcome to the luncheon in the church basement following the service.
