Mr. Leo A. Bartay, 88, Springfield passed away at 4:50 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 16, 2005 in Woodland Manor Nursing Home.

Leo was born Jan. 28, 1916 in Oklahoma City, Okla. He married Beulah Marie (Plotner) Fullerton on May 14, 1955. Mr. Bartay served in the U.S. Army during WWII earning the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal, with the Bronze Service Stars, Bronze Arrowhead and the Good Conduct Medal in the following campaigns, Rome-Arno; Naples-Foggio; Southern France; Rhineland; and Central Europe. He worked for NASA during the moon landing and helped create the Lunar Rover Craft. He also worked for Northrup Aircraft in Hawthorne, Calif.

Mr. Bartay was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Elizabeth Graham; his stepson, Carl Fullerton; 2 brothers, Jimmy and Ted; and his sister, Nellie.

He is survived by his wife, Beulah Marie Bartay of the home; his stepdaughter, Juanita Rothermel and her husband Ted of Springfield; 2 stepsons, Richard Baxter of Nixa and Thomas Baxter of Tulsa, Okla.; and a niece, Diane Neely of Wetumka, Okla.

Funeral Mass will be at 9 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005 in St. Joseph Catholic Church with Fr. Denis Doughtery, OSB celebrant. Burial with military honors will follow in the Missouri Veterans Cemetery under the care of Herman H. Lohmeyer Funeral Home 500 E. Walnut St.

Visitation will be from 6:00 pm until 7:30 pm with Prayer Services starting at 7:30 pm all in the funeral home.
