Laverna Cavender

Laverna B. Cavender was born, May 12, 1918 and died on Friday, February 22, 2008. Laverna was married to Herbert H. Cavender in Springfield in 1946, where she lived until his death in 1966. She moved to Kansas City where she worked as a secretary at Marion Laboratories. After her retirement in 1984, she returned to Springfield.

Laverna was always involved in her children's activities, serving as PTA president, den mother, and leader for Bluebirds, and Camp Fire Girls. She was a member of Toastmistress and Toastmasters for eight years, Regional Girls Shelter Board President, President of the State and local Women's Auxiliary of United Federation of Postal Clerks. She served as president of the American Business Women's Association and was most proud to serve as president of the Missouri Federation of Women's Democratic Clubs.

Laverna was a longtime member of St. Paul Methodist Church and when she returned to Springfield, at Wesley United Methodist Church. She was a member of Stephen's Ministries.

Laverna loved to play bridge. She still played bridge as the last original member of her bridge club since 1946. She loved to read and knit sweaters for all her children and grandchildren.

Laverna is survived by her four children, Richard Cavender and wife, Jeanne of Rolla, Mary Boyer and husband, Jerry, Martha Firestone and husband, Ron, and David Cavender and wife, Dianne, all of Springfield; grandchildren, Kim Durrett, Laura Cavender, Daniel Cavender, Mary Ellen Karlson, Nathan Firestone, and Christopher Firestone; great-granddaughters, Jennifer Durett and Ava Cavender; and great-great-granddaughter, Jayden Durrett.

Funeral service will be 1:00 p.m., Monday, February 25, 2008 in Herman H. Lohmeyer Funeral Home Chapel, 500 E. Walnut. Burial will be in Hazelwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday in the funeral home.
