Kathleen Fizer (Kirwin): Born Jan. 22, 1930, died May 22, 2014. Survived by her twin sister, Katherine Kirwin Harcourt and her daughter, Pamela Kay Fizer and by family and friends who she loved very much and who loved her right back. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Chandler F. Fizer and James Atherton; parents, Arthur and Kathryn Kirwin and siblings, James, Charles (Kayo), Mary and Ione.
Kathleen passed peacefully after a long and painful struggle with cancer. She was a strong, funny redhead with great taste (and legs, according to my Dad); blessed with an ability to sing opera and show tunes, sew, decorate and cook; she was a single mom when it was frowned upon, but despite the struggles gave her daughter a fantastic life. She met and married a wonderful man, a great father, brother, uncle and friend – and we all thank her for finding him and bringing him into our lives. Together they imparted the importance of integrity, honesty and hard work. They showed that love through their actions, by standing up for, and by, me and my cousins and friends as we made our way through life. She opened her heart to many people, is much loved and will be missed by many, most especially by her sister and daughter.
Her loves included the St. Louis Cardinals; horse racing (c’mon Triple Crown); her dogs, and walking them at Close Memorial Park; travel, especially to Yellowstone and the Grand Tetons; bird watching, photography and her home, which is a reflection of her decorating talent and good taste. She had a terrific sense of humor, loved movies, the arts and PBS, Jeopardy and most recently, Cash Cab. She was a patriot, loved her country and was politically inclined to the end. She loved her yard and her screened back porch, where she could bird watch and catch a ball game at the same time.
At her request, there will be no visitation or service. Interment will be at Springfield National Cemetery at 2 PM on Friday, June 20. She requested that we celebrate her life with an Irish Wake, which will be held at her home following the interment. We invite all who knew her to join us to share stories, photos, music, food and drink and the love we felt for Kathleen.
