Jon David Hanson, 77, of Springfield, Missouri, passed away after an extended illness at 7:20 a.m. on February 7, 2025, at Mercy Hospital in Springfield.
He was born on January 29, 1948, in Chillicothe, Missouri, to Russell Lowell and Anita Nelle (Matson) Hanson. He attended schools in Chillicothe, graduating from Chillicothe High School in 1966 where he was a member of the National Honor Society and participated in football, basketball, and golf. He attended Drake University and the University of Missouri—Columbia before graduating with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration and Physical Education from Northeast Missouri State College (now Truman State University) in June of 1971. He returned to Chillicothe, where he worked for an accounting firm and was active in the Chillicothe Kiwanis Club, serving as treasurer for a time. In 1981, he relocated to Springfield, Missouri, where he began graduate studies at Southwest Missouri State University (now Missouri State University), earning a Master of Accountancy degree in December of 1983. He also received his Certified Public Accountant certification. He was hired by Missouri State University in 1985 as an accountant in the Control Office (now Financial Services) where his area of expertise was with the MSU Foundation. He retired from the university in 2011.
Jon was always an enthusiastic sports fan and enjoyed traveling and reading. He was a member of the Masonic Friendship Lodge #89 in Chillicothe.
Jon was predeceased by an infant sister (in 1953); his father, Russell Hanson (in 1974); his mother, Anita Hanson (in 1979); and a brother, Jack Hanson (in 2017). He is survived by a sister-in-law, Lynne; a brother, James “Jim” Hanson and his wife, Carol; one nephew, Christopher Hanson; two nieces, Diana Scrivner and Stacy Siele; a cousin, Nelson Davis; and a lifelong friend, Richard “Dick” Saale.
A private interment will be at Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Chillicothe. A celebration-of-life gathering will take place in Springfield at a later date. Arrangements are under the care of Herman H. Lohmeyer Funeral Home in Springfield.
