John Smith

John Edward (Ed) Smith, age 75, of Springfield, Mo passed away Tuesday, October 1, 2013.

He was happily married to his High School sweetheart, Ann (Nimmo) Smith, for 55 years. He proudly served his country as a young man in the Air Force reserves, and later served Springfield in the Police Dept. He felt privileged to lead the first Special Action Squad and also led the SW Missouri Narcotics Division. He retired as a detective from the Springfield Police Dept. after 26 years of service. He also worked for Murney and Associates. He was a member of the Elks Lodge 409 for 35 years and a devoted Springfield and St. Louis Cardinals fan. He was a member of Journey Church. The most important thing in his life was his family. He loved being with his family and traveling. He was very proud of the fact that he and Ann had visited all 50 states.

He was preceded in death by his parents, J.W. and Dollie Smith; sister, Myrtle; Father in law, Harold (Shorty) Nimmo, brothers-in-law, Clarence, Bill and Dick; and nephew Deryll.

He is survived by his wife, Ann; three sons, Greg (friend Theresa Tracy), Steve (wife Donna) and Larry; grandchildren, Ashley (husband Jonathan Bagley), Alex (fiancee Leslie Robison), Lindsey, Shawn, Payton and Paxton Smith; and great-grandchildren, Taylor, Braden and Ruby Bagley and Jaylyn Smith. Other survivors include sisters, Lula (Don) Sneddon, Donna (Doug) Norris, Wanda Lindsey; his mother-in-law, Bessie Nimmo; and other in-laws, Charles and Brenda Nimmo, Harold and Karen Nimmo, Sue Chastain, Dolly Baker; and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends.

Graveside services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday October 5, 2013 in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens with Pastor Jeremy Rapp officiating under the care of Herman H. Lohmeyer Funeral Home, 500 E. Walnut St.

Visitation will be from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday in the funeral home. The casket will be closed at all times.
