John Long

John Roy Long, 72, of Springfield, Missouri passed into eternal life on Friday, May 28, 2021. He was born on August 5, 1948, the son of Roy Long and Martha ‘Peggy’ Long in Toledo, Ohio. John attended the University of Northern Iowa where he saw a girl with long, auburn hair, named Trudy Thomson. They met at a college dance on campus as teenagers and have been inseparable for over five decades. He graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in History before spending many years in sales where he impacted countless lives. Never caught without a firm, “John Long” handshake and a good laugh, he was a light to all who crossed his path.

John married Trudy Hope Thomson on August 2nd, 1969 in Des Moines, Iowa at Windsor United Methodist Church, and she remained the love of his life until his last breath. All who knew John were keenly aware that his love for T-Hope was second to none. His highest calling was to be fully devoted to his marriage and to his children and grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Peggy Long.

John is survived by his beloved wife of 52 years, Trudy Hope Thomson Long; his two children, Chad Long and wife, Ann, and Tara Whiles and husband, Jeff; and grandchildren Hannah Long, Evann Long, Kody Whiles and Jase Whiles. He is also survived by his brothers James Long and wife, Marlene; Jason Long, and wife Alisha, brother-in-law, Craig Thomson, and wife, Millie; as well as many nieces and nephews.

His love for life and contagious laughter will be greatly missed. In all that he did, John never met a stranger and made friends of all who crossed his path. John was someone who truly made everyone feel like “a someone.” His legacy of unconditional love and widespread friendship will be carried on throughout future generations.

Funeral services will be held at 1 pm Wednesday June 2, 2021 at Wesley United Methodist Church with Pastor Michael McIntyre officiating. Burial will follow in Frazier Cemetery in Boaz under the care of Herman H. Lohmeyer Funeral Home. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service in the church.
