John Bauer

John Patrick Bauer passed away January 17th, 8:50 a.m. in James River Care Center, Springfield.

John was born April 7, 1947 at St John's Hospital (now St John's Regional Health Center) in Springfield, the second of five children by parents James H. and Betty Ann Bauer. John has been described by those who knew him as among the most dynamic of individuals; a biology major at Southwest Missouri State University (now MSU) in 1972 he earned a Masters degree in chemistry and later a teachers certificate. John was also an accomplished swimmer and lifeguard, a musician who frequently performed for the elderly and infirmed, a lover of the outdoors and a highly religious man. John was married June 7, 1969 to JoAnn LaPlante of Aurora, Mo. JoAnn preceded him in death in June 2006. Together they raised three children, Thomas Arthur, Jason Henry and Sara Elizabeth. John served as an officer in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam era and afterwards taught biology in the Seymour School system, until medical complications necessitated an early retirement. John continued to support his family emotionally, worship through his Catholic faith and brighten lives with a spirit of joy. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

John leaves behind his children; Tom Bauer and wife Krista and their five children Olivia, Spencer, Andrew, Gabriel and Abigail; Jason Bauer and wife Diane and son Nick, and Sara Brennan and husband Pat and children Jack and Finley. He also leaves behind sisters Katherine Ann and husband Robert Stringham, and Annamarie Bauer and husband Tom Shore, and brothers James Michael and wife Kathleen, and Joseph Bruce and partner Henry Lam.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Tuesday January 19, 2010 in Herman H. Lohmeyer Funeral Home, 500 E. Walnut St. with Rosary services starting at 7:00 p.m..

Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday January 20, 2010 in Holy Trinity Catholic Church with Father Fergus Monaghan celebrant.

Burial in Missouri Veterans Cemetery will be at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, please honor John's spirit of giving with a contribution to The Kitchen, 1630 N. Jefferson, Springfield, MO 65803.
