Jerome Arnold Caplan, 91, died Wednesday, August 12, at Cox South after a long and valiant struggle with Parkinson's Disease. He was born June 23, 1918, in Hartford, Connecticut, attended Hartford Federal College and Wesleyan College, and graduated from Columbia University. He was a hero of the Battle of the Bulge in World War II, for which he received a Bronze Star, and the all-Black unit he led received a Presidential Citation. His successful, multifaceted business career encompassed development of multiple properties both residential and commercial, and he was a prescient investor. The family he leaves behind will forever treasure his legacy of love, support, grace, gentleness, modesty, integrity, and honor. He was a patron of the arts and of other community institutions, to which he provided generous support.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Tac Caplan, and his daughter, Paula J. Caplan of Cambridge, MA; his son, Bruce M. Caplan, and daughter-in-law, Judith Shechter, of Narberth, PA; his grandchildren, Jeremy B. Caplan of Edmonton, Alberta, and Emily J. Caplan Stephenson of Rockville, MD, Lindsay A. Caplan of Brooklyn, NY, and Adam J. Caplan of Medford, MA; his daughter-in-law, Esther Fujiwara of Edmonton, Alberta, and son-in-law, Jamaal A. Stephenson of Rockville, MD; and his great-grandchildren, Noah Alexander Stephenson and Gabrielle Simone Stephenson of Rockville, MD, and June Anna Caplan Fujiwara of Edmonton, Alberta.
A memorial service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at the Executive Conference Center, 910 W. Battlefield, conducted by Dr. Roger Ray. Donations may be made to any of the Caplan funds of the Community Foundation of the Ozarks.
