Jeffrey Todd McNabb, age 54, left this world on July 8, 2023 after suffering a stroke on the 4th of July. He was born in Springfield, Missouri on October 9, 1968 to Richard and Ruby (Garrett) McNabb. Jeff gave the ultimate gift of life by ending his days as an organ donor. Prayers to those who will receive his donations, as they don’t yet know what spunky spirit will live on inside them.
Jeff was a rare breed that you just don’t find anymore. He was unbelievably witty, a master prankster, compassionate, and loved others unconditionally. If you followed him on social media, you would wake up each day to at least one hilarious meme and an inspirational post. Jeff loved music and had an extensive guitar collection to prove it. He hated Def Leppard, but we won’t hold that against him. Everyone has their faults.
Jeff graduated from Central High School in 1987 where he participated in journalism, band, and tennis. If you went to CHS, you wouldn’t forget Jeff, and he didn’t forget you. He graduated from Missouri State University with a Bachelor of Arts in English and at one point was working towards a Masters degree in Library Science. Previous employers were not limited to but included the Kansas City Library System, Staples, Price Cutter, and for a brief time he taught English in South America.
It was no secret that for many years Jeff struggled with alcoholism, until achieving sobriety in 2018. In true Jeff fashion, once he was sober he held the torch that led others to the same victory. Jeff was employed by the New Beginnings Sanctuary where he found his purpose in life, mentoring others to find their way to sobriety. He believed in others, even when they didn’t believe in themselves. Jeff frequently shared that he found his way to sobriety only when he decided that he wanted it for himself, and not because everyone else wanted it for him. Jeff was a true friend and ally, and we are all better off for having known him.
Jeff was preceded in death by his parents, Ruby and Richard McNabb, his grandparents, Clyde and Cloie McNabb and Boyd and Maud Garrett. He is survived by his brother Greg McNabb (wife Connie) and niece Peyton McNabb. He is also survived by numerous half siblings, step siblings, nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, friends, and colleagues. Jeff was genuinely loved, and if he lived to be 105 it still wouldn’t have been enough time with him.
Mass will begin at 1:00 PM on Saturday, July 15, 2023 at St. Agnes Cathedral, 533 S. Jefferson Avenue in Springfield, Missouri. Visitation with the family will begin at noon in the Cathedral. Burial to follow at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 3506 North National Avenue, Springfield, Missouri.
In lieu of flowers, we ask that you consider a donation to the New Beginning Sanctuary at https://www.nbsanctuary.org/.
