James Bynum

James Henry Bynum died on August 5, the day after his 92nd birthday. He was the last survivor of Francis and Mable Bynum’s nine children. Jay was born and lived in Stonefort, Il, until he joined the US Army Air Corp in 1941.
He earned his bachelor’s degree from San Francisco State, a master’s degree from KU, and a Phd from UMKC.
He was a life-long educator and author of four novels and a book of poetry.
He retired from Drury University where he had been department head of English/communications and past president of AAUP..
He taught in France, Panama and Australia.
He was a longtime member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife Christine of 53 years, a daughter Susan Love (Danny) and grandchildren Lily, Joey, Jamie; his son Chris Bynum (Lynn) and their children Alec Bynum; Krystee Hedgpeth, Colten Bynum; daughter Sarah Nelson (Tom Stivers) and granddaughter Hannah Nelson and two great grandchildren. He is also survived by a foster daughter Elizabeth McGraw and children, brother-in-law Carl Gregoroski, sisters-in-laws Evelyn Anderson (Robert) and Alvina and Damian Tasset who was Jay’s best friend.
Funeral mass will be at 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, August 9, 2016, in Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Springfield. Under the care of Herman H. Lohmeyer Funeral Home. The rosary will be at 6 p.m. Monday, August 8, 2016 with visitation following till 8 p.m. in the funeral home. Burial with full military honors will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Missouri Veterans Cemetery, Springfield.
