Herman Lee “Mac” McClain Jr. passed away at age 65 on September 20, 2011. He was born Feb. 5, 1946 to Herman and Nell McClain of Mt. Vernon, MO
Mac grew up in Mt. Vernon, the youngest of 4 children. He graduated from Mt. Vernon HS and went on to SMSU, in Springfield MO, where he earned a degree in History and Sociology. Mac worked for many years at Gardner and White Insurance, retiring in 2001.
In 1984, Mac married the love of his life, Stella. They were blessed with many wonderful years together where they traveled, took up running and biking, and spent many hours enjoying time alone and with their friends and family.
Mac is survived by his wife, Stella; three children, Laura McClain and husband Jay, Leslie McClain-Fernandez and husband Dan, and Tyson Petty and wife Patty; three grandchildren, Ty, Will and Tess; and three sisters, Peggy Hubbard and husband Dwayne, Miriam Simpson and husband Bob, and Doots Vanderhoef and husband Mike.
Mac was an extraordinary man who always approached life with optimism and unbridled enthusiasm. He was far younger than his stated age. Mac’s friends, and there are so many, could always count on him to bring genuine excitement and energy to anything he was involved in, and he would encourage others to follow his lead. Mac worked hard, played hard, and was a dedicated community servant. Above all else, he was an extraordinary husband, father, and grandfather. On his last morning on this earth, Mac and Stella were enjoying their routine of exercise together at the Nature Center in Springfield. Mac died peacefully, on a bench in the filtered light under a canopy of early autumn leaves. A sad but perfect day in the Ozarks.
