Gertraud Elfrieda Johanna Fiedler Mining, 88, was born in Berlin, Germany on June 24, 1923, and left this earth on March 8, 2012 following a short illness at home. She was the second of 4 daughters, whose father was a well-known construction company owner in Berlin. Gertraud worked in business following graduation from business school, her company transferring a few times to keep the staff out of danger from the war. She came to the United States in 1951, after she met and married Samuel C. Mining, a Texan who served in the Army and transferred to the Air Force after World War II. They raised two girls, Denise and Karen and moved permanently to the states in 1965, when Sam retired.
Gertraud worked in the sewing industry and business, later working for the IRS after her husband Sam died in 1976. She later worked for the Clinton Police Department as well as part time sales in Home Interiors, retiring in 1988. She volunteered at Golden Valley Memorial Hospital, Clinton, MO, Clinton Community Counseling Board of Directors, and St. Agnes in Springfield, MO as a money counter, preparing bulletins and various events. In all her work and volunteering she has made and kept many friends over the years, and is known for her generosity and many stories of an interesting and well lived life.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Sam, her mother Johanna, who died when Gertraud was three, her father Franz and stepmother, Matilda, two sisters, Renate and Liesel, and beloved great-granddaughter, Bailey, who shared her middle name, Johanna.
She is survived by her two daughters, Denise Mining Childress, and husband Larry, of Strafford and Karen Mining Dobson, of Springfield; three grandchildren, Kimberly Dobson Buckner, and husband Jay, Scott Dobson and Lisa Dobson; 6 great-grandchildren, Brooklyn, Brennah, Brett, and Brielle Buckner, and Mikayla and Mariah Dobson; as well as younger sister, Gisela; and a host of relatives and friends.
Donations may be made in lieu of flowers to the Foundations For Our Future Fund, St. Agnes Cathedral, Springfield, MO.
Funeral Mass will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday March 12, 2012 in St. Agnes Cathedral with Fr. Mike McDevitt celebrant. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery under the care of Herman H. Lohmeyer Funeral Home.
Visitation will be from 6:00 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. Sunday March 11, 2012 with a Rosary starting at 7:15 p.m. all in the chapel at St. Agnes.
