Gerald Maloney

Gerald (Jerry) Verner Maloney was born on September 1,1939, in Alton, Illinois and passed away on August 22, 2011 at St. John's Hospital after a long, brave battle with complications for treatment of a brain tumor.

Jerry grew up in Alton, Illinois. He married Kay Welton, and moved to Springfield in 1965. He managed the Robert Hall clothing company franchise, until the advent of the mall era. He enjoyed many things throughout the years: motorcycle racing and trail riding, boating on Table Rock Lake, and being with friends and family. He had an uncanny knowledge of anything collectible or antique such as Lionel trains, toys, motorcycles, and cars, and he could sell, or fix anything.

Jerry was a very generous and giving man. If you admired something of his, he likely would just give it to you. Friends and family were drawn to his driveway for years as a daily hangout. He loved conversation, and was truly interested in what the other person was saying. During the last decade he spent his winters in Florida, which became a great passion in his life. In Florida, just as in Springfield, people gravitated to him. He always seemed to be the center of everything, the touchstone, irreplaceable. He is much loved, and will be greatly missed.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Tamara Erin Maloney Hicks, his parents, Pauline and Siegel Maloney, and two brothers, Patrick and Ronald. He is survived by his wife Louise Catherine (Kay), his daughter Kimberly and son-in-law Teddy Pridgen, daughter Julie and son-in-law Peter Garrett, son-in-law Toby Hicks, husband of Tamara, and his beloved grandchildren, Nick Byers and fiance' Whitney Morgan, and Keeton and Alana Hicks. Also surviving are sister Janet Yates of Alton, Illinois, nieces Shelly and Amy, and their boys Brenden and Lane, numerous cousins, and many dear friends.

A memorial mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday August 26, 2011 in St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church with Msgr. Thomas Reidy celebrant. Burial will follow in Resurrection Cemetery under the care of Herman H. Lohmeyer Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Friday until service time in the church.
