George Swisher

George Richard Swisher was born on February 22, 1933, in Culver, Kansas to Charles and Florence Swisher. He departed this life on October 9, 2015.
He grew up on a farm near Urbana, Mo, and graduated from Tunas High School in 1951. George worked for John Deere Weber Company in Minneapolis for two years before joining the Army’s 804th Engineer Aviation Division. It was with this division that he served his country during the Korean War.
George retired in 1991, after working for various heavy equipment companies in Kansas City, Mo, Springfield, Mo and Muskogee, Ok. Most of his retirement years were spent in Springfield, Mo. He and Marilyn spent their time traveling across the U.S. and Canada in the RV. George loved spending time on the deck talking and laughing with his family and friends; he also loved playing pool and board games with his grandchildren and teaching them how to drive the golf cart.
He belonged to Knights of Columbus Council 9533 and was a 4th Degree Knight. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church where he served as an usher and Eucharistic Minister.
George leaves behind his loving wife Marilyn of 59 years; their seven children: daughter Clarissa Craig and husband Art, of Olathe, Ks; son Michael and wife Mary Ann of Lee’s Summit, Mo; son David of Springfield, Mo; daughter Tamara Kamphaus and husband John of Dallas, Tx; daughter Alisa Swisher, of Lee’s Summit, Mo; daughter Rita Jensen and husband Brent, of Springfield, Mo; and son Glenn and wife Shelly of Broken Arrow, Ok. He is also survived by nine grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren, his sister and brother in law June and Vernon Doyle of Branson, Mo; brother Kenneth of Buffalo, Mo, and sister Hazel Archer of Springfield, Mo. Also survived by his sister in law DiAnne Naros, of California, Mo and brother in law Charles Stedem (Sharron) of Chillicothe, Mo. George also left behind many nieces, nephews and multiple friends and loved ones.
Funeral mass will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday Oct. 13, 2015 in Sacred Heart Catholic Church Springfield, Mo. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service in the church. Committal services with military honors will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Missouri Veterans Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Sacred Heart Catholic Church or the Catholic Campus Ministries.
