Mr. Fred L. Bacon, 84 of Springfield passed away at 12:20 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, 2008 in Mt. Vernon Veterans Home.
Fred was born Jan. 11, 1924 in Grandin, Missouri to Fred and Estelle (Lowrey) Bacon. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of the VFW and the American Legion. For ten years he helped display the flags for national holidays at the Springfield National Cemetery. Fred retired from the Federal Medical Center in Springfield. He enjoyed working out faithfully everyday at the Hammons Heart Institute and later at the Chesterfield Family Center.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife, Dessie Bacon and his brother, Gene Bacon. He is survived by his wife, Helen Lohmeyer Bacon of the home; four cousins, John Bacon of Willow Springs, Opal O'Neill of Springfield, Fern Baggett of Ozark and Owen O'Neill of Battlefield; four step-children, Doug Clift of Norman, Okla., Deb Lohmeyer of North Hampton, Mass., Tre Lohmeyer of St. Louis, Mo., and Mary Korte of Tulsa, Okla.; and seven grandchildren.
Graveside services with military honors will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 20, 2008 in Rivermonte Memorial Gardens with Msgr. Thomas Reidy officiating under the care of Herman H. Lohmeyer Funeral Home 500 E. Walnut St.
Visitation will be from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the funeral home.
