Ervin J. Smith 88, born in Caldwell County Missouri to C.D. and Mary Ruth (Mellon) Smith. Mr. Smith was a veteran of World War II, serving in both France and Germany. He crossed the English Channel D-Day plus six and on May 6, 1945 ended World War II in Styer, Austria on the Elbe River. Mr. Smith was awarded the Purple Heart twice and the Bronze Star. Mr. Smith was married to the love of his life Hildegard Stiller at St. Elizabeth’s Catholic Church in Augsburg, Germany on July 5, 1947. Mr. Smith served 45 years as a Chemical Engineer in the coating industry in new auto finishes. Mr. Smith was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans and the Federation of Paint Technology. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by three brothers, Charles, Enoch and Daniel and two sisters, Ruth Leabo and Evelyn Turner. He is survived by his wife Hildegard, many nephews, nieces and friends.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 pm, Monday, June 2nd at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery under the care of Herman H. Lohmeyer Funeral Home, Springfield.
