Emma Tay

Emma GiokNio Tay, born The Giok Nio, was born on March 28, 1925 in Grabag, Indonesia to The Swie Sing and Liem Kiat Nio. She passed away on November 11, 2011 in Springfield, Missouri.

She is survived by her sister, The Kiam Nio, and her three sons, Anthony, Richard, and David and six grandchildren, Monica, Courtney, Melissa, Jessica, Michael, and Allison.

She grew up in Magelang, Indonesia and attended MULO School. She met her eventual husband and sweetheart, Frederick Tay, at a rooming house in Jakarta. They married in 1953. He worked as an attorney at law, while she worked as an assistant phrmacist.

In 1969, the couple opened a pharmacy, Apotik Bhakti Farma, at their residence while Frederick closed his law practice. It was a success and they opened a second pharmacy, Apotik Amica, in the Karet District in Jakarta in 1973.

Foreseeing better future for their sons elsewhere, Emma and Fred sold their pharmacies and home and moved to Santa Monica, California in 1975. They opened a coin operated laundry in Los Angeles. Through hard work and dedication, they managed to send their three sons to college and encouraged all three to become physicians.

Emma and Fred retired in 1998 to live in a cozy home in Temple, Texas. He passed away in 2002 at the age of 82. At the invitation of Anthony, she moved to Springfield, Missouri in 2008 to live with him and his family.

On November 11, 2011, the Good Lord called her home. Her remains will be cremated and the ashes will be scattered over the Pacific Ocean as her stated wishes.
