Edward Sayles

Edward D. Sayles passed away in his home in Springfield on July 16, 2008. He was 94 years old. Mr. Sayles was born July 6, 1914 to Louis Francis and Anna Mildred (Deer) Sayles in St. Joseph, Missouri. An outstanding childhood influence was his grandfather "Papa" Deer. Mr. Sayles was preceded in death by his son-in-law, John David Thompson.

Survivors include a daughter, Linda Diane Sayles Thompson of St. Louis; and three grandsons, John Edward, David Jay and James Douglas Thompson. Charles Bowers was a special family friend who gave many happy hours of companionship to "E.D."

Heartfelt thanks to Norma Herbold and Louise Rainey for providing loving care to Mr. Sayles in his home. Also appreciation is extended to HPC Hospice including Jessica Osbourn, and also to Sally Cooper. Neighbors played an important part in the life of E.D. Thanks to Gary and Carol Thompson, Niesje Nelson, and many others.

Mr. Sayles was a professional civil engineer working on bridges and highway projects throughout Missouri. A World War II veteran, he served as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne (Screaming Eagles) seeing action at Normandy, Bastogne and numerous other locations.

Graveside services with military honors will be held at 2:00 p.m. Monday, July 21, 2008 in Maple Park Cemetery under the care of Herman H. Lohmeyer Funeral Home. No formal visitation is planned, however friends may call from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday in the funeral home.
