Doris Schorp

Doris Ann Schorp, 89, passed away Tuesday June 18, 2019 in The Manor at Elfindale in Springfield, Missouri.

She was born October 1, 1929 in St. Louis, Missouri to Harry J. and Clara (Kneusel) Schmidt. She grew up in the Hyde Park neighborhood and attended Central High School, graduating at age 16. She began working at a dress factory where she learned to sew beautifully. She also worked as a Draftswoman for Bell Telephone Company, drafting where poles and lines were to be built.

Doris’s family were long time members of Friedens Church in St. Louis, in the mostly German community where they lived. It was there where she met Milton Schorp before he joined the Navy during WWII. When he returned to St. Louis, they dated and were married on April 27, 1950.

Together they worked hard and started a family, raising three girls. Doris was constantly sewing, making all the girls clothes, coats and even suits for Milt. She was always very fashion conscious, and when Jackie Kennedy would appear on television in the 1960’s with a new outfit, Doris would head to the fabric department at Famous Barr. Within a day, she’d have an exact replica of Jackie’s ensemble completed, including matching gloves and always a reproduction handmade hat.

She and Milt loved to travel, and the family took many long car trips over the years, visiting every state but Hawaii and Alaska. When they visited Disneyland in California, the whole family, including Grandpa, wore the red checkered shirts Doris had sewn, so as not to get lost from each other. Some years the family took short trips, first going to Lake of the Ozarks, then to Table Rock Lake where they eventually decided to move to. They owned and operated Arrowhead Resort on Table Rock Lake in the 70’s.

After they sold the resort, they bought wooded land to build a home overlooking the lake. Milt was now working at Silver Dollar City. After work, he would cut down trees, then during the day, Doris would start a fire and drag limbs and brush, almost single-handedly clearing their acreage. In the spring, they always planted a huge garden, and summers were spent with the grandkids picking vegetables after a wonderful day on the lake fishing and swimming.

Doris was an excellent cook, and it was a common occurrence to have 15 – 20 people around the dinner table at their house at the lake. Summers were always barbequed pork steaks and a giant pot of German spaghetti, and cooler weather brought on vegetable soup with homemade noodles & just-baked bread. Dessert was either rhubarb, apple or peach crumb pie. Each grandchild had their favorite food that she made, and it would always be waiting for them when it was their turn to go to Grandma & Grandpa’s house for the weekend.

We will miss her dearly.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Milton and a granddaughter, Meagan Murdaugh. She is survived by her daughters, Denise Schorp, Dianne (Steve) Murdaugh, and Lynn (Paul) Wunderlich; grandchildren Andy (Portland) Murdaugh, Holly (Tim) Ferrell, Heidi (Joel) Champ, Ted (Katy) Wunderlich and Emily Wunderlich; great-grandchildren Maya, Magnolia, Cian, Ronan, Isabelle, Isaiah, Evelyn, Thomas, Charlotte, and Sam; and nieces and nephews.
