David Schulty

David (Dave) Schulty passed away on June 3, 2015 at Mercy Hospital after a short illness. He was born on October 25, 1938, in Chicago, IL to William and Justine Schulty.

Dave was married to Diane Weddle on July 5, 1971. They had one child, a son named Matthew, who preceded his father in death.

Dave is survived by his wife of the home, one sister, Jo Ann Kettaneh, of Chicago, IL, and several nieces and nephews.

Dave was a graduate of the University of Missouri School of Journalism and spent most of his life working in the newspaper business. He was a long-time employee of the Springfield News-Leader, first as a sports writer and later as Sports Editor of the Springfield Daily News, which was the then morning edition of the News-Leader. He spent a short time in Chicago at a suburban newspaper, but soon returned to Springfield to continue working at the News-Leader – taking two years out to fulfill his military obligations with the U.S. Army. He left Springfield in 1983 to work for the American Bowling Congress in Milwaukee, WI, then back to the newspaper business in 1985 when he became Managing Editor of The Coastland Times on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, where he finished out his career. During his 15 or so years in Springfield, he covered many fast pitch softball tournaments, Mizzou football games, and wrote countless columns under the heading of “Sports Brewings” as well as seasonal columns on fast pitch softball and bowling. His end-of-the-year column always featured a picture of the cross-eyed, silent films actor, Ben Turpin. This was a running joke, which no one seemed to be in on but him. In 1993, he was inducted into the Springfield Amateur Softball Association Hall of Fame as a sports writer.

Dave was a long-time volunteer at the then Springfield Boys Club as a basketball coach, earning the honor of Coach of the Year in 1970, and later coached many Little League teams involving his son. He also served on the Board of Directors at the Boys Club and was honored by the club for “devoted service” in 1972.

Dave’s Catholic faith was very important to him. One could probably count on one hand the number of times he missed Sunday Mass in his life. No matter where he was or what he was doing, he always made time for the Lord by attending Mass on Sunday.

Dave’s many interests included baseball, especially his Chicago Cubs, horse racing (sorry you had to miss the Belmont Stakes race this weekend – we know how much you were looking forward to that), and reading.

A memorial service will be held in his honor on Saturday, June 13, at 10:00 AM, at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, with Reverend Thomas E. Reidy officiating. Please, no flowers – direct any donations to Boys and Girls Clubs of Springfield. Thank you.
