Daniel Joseph Deeken, 56, of Springfield passed away Saturday, February 14, at home with family after a courageous battle with cancer.
He was born October 6, 1952, in Jefferson City the third of four sons of John and Germaine Deeken. On April 30, 1977, Dan married the woman of his dreams, Judy Ruzicka, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Springfield eleven months after their first date. Dan graduated from Helias High School in 1970 and Missouri State University with a BA in Psychology in 1975 and earned a CPCU while serving 30 years for American Family Insurance Co. He was preceded in death by his parents John and Germaine Deeken. He is survived by his wife, Judy, and their two children; daughter and son-in-law Rachel and Joseph Keating, and their children Frances and Eugene of Annapolis, MD; and son and daughter-in-law John and Corey, of Fenton, MO.; and his three brothers and sisters-in-law: Jack and Mary Deeken of Jefferson City, MO; Tom and Cathy Deeken of Jefferson City, MO; and Alan and Kathleen Deeken of Key Port, NJ. He is also survived by Judy's parents, John and Mary Frances Ruzicka, and their children and spouses; Suzy and Steve Gray, Cynthia Ruzicka, Mary Ann and Charlie Dahlgren, and Matt Ruzicka and numerous nieces and nephews.
Dan donated countless hours to St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church in volunteer community service such as the chairman for the building committee and especially relished his time in the Men's Club. He was the president of the Kickapoo HS football booster club and coached youth baseball teams. Dan enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping, especially the float trips on Missouri Rivers. His selflessness with time and money was merely a consequence of his passion for the well being of others.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, February 17, 2009 in St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church of Springfield with Prayer Services starting at 7:00. The Funeral Mass will begin at 10:00 am Wednesday, concelebrated by Msgr. Thomas E. Reidy and Fr. Fergus Monaghan. Following the Mass, all are invited to a dinner at the church. His final trip will then be to St.Wenceslaus Cemetery in Bolivar, MO on Wednesday.
