Bonnie Jo Payne Lietz Hartman

Born August 26, 1937, in La Salle, Colorado, she was the daughter of Jessie Etta McVey and Herman Scott Payne. She was sister to Wilma, Ed, Al, Larry, Lavon, June, and Marvin (Bud) Payne. Bonnie departed this mortal existence on July 12, 2021, after living a fulfilled life. Her testimony of Jesus Christ was the foundation of her life. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints since 1960. Bonnie was an avid gardener, and she loved fishing, shooting, doing crossword and jigsaw puzzles, playing Scrabble, birdwatching, reading, and watching western movies. Her favorite color was blue!

Bonnie married Henry George Lietz, Jr., on February 14, 1957, in Clinton, Missouri; they divorced after 26 years. She found John Calvin Hartman later in her life. Bonnie and John were married December 28, 2004, in the Saint Louis Missouri Temple. She graduated from Urich High School in 1956, where she lettered in basketball all four years. Bonnie graduated Missouri Southern State University in 1983 with a degree in Nursing, and she worked as a Registered Nurse for more than 30 years. She retired in 1997 as a charge nurse at the Chest Hospital in Mt. Vernon, Missouri.

Bonnie was the beloved mother of Henry Gregory Lietz (Buffy), Etta Nadine Armstrong (Bill), Karen Elaine Phillips (Dave), Jessie Evelyn Ritchie (Tony), Joseph Daren Lietz (Kim), William Force Lietz (Aleta), Rebecca Deann Cox (Kory), and Kevin Ray Lietz. They called her Grannie and she was the proud grandmother of Brian Lietz (Beth), Cora Lietz (Taylor), Daniel Armstrong (Andrea), Jason Armstrong (Kana), Laura Storie (Anthony), Megan Jones (Mitch), Lee Phillips (Claire), Brewster Phillips, Jordan Phillips (Brittany), Natalie Phillips, Sharon Ritchie (Carl), Jesse Ritchie, Madelyn Lietz, Ava Lietz, Brittany Holgate (Joshua), Andrew Lietz (Arianna), Jacob Lietz (Kayla), David Lietz, Emma Lietz, Leann Cox (Billy), Austin Cox (Taz), and Derik Cox. At the time of her death, she had 17 great-grandchildren.

Bonnie was preceded in death by her parents, her oldest son Henry Gregory Lietz, all four brothers, her sister Wilma, and her husband, John Hartman. She was a fierce protector and a woman of faith. Bonnie was a self-reliant woman of many talents: home improvement construction (including plumbing, electrical wiring, drywall, etc.), car mechanics, gardening, canning, bread making, candy making, camping, cooking, chicken/rabbit butchering, knot tying, sewing, woodchopping, tractor operator, barber, and expert medic.

She is remembered by her family as a loving sister and aunt, a strong-spirited mother, a fun grandmother, and a determined, tenacious individual. These traits continue very strongly through all her offspring and the succeeding generations.
