Bernice Alene Reid Gorham, 87, passed away on Friday, June 6, 2008, surrounded by her loved ones. Bernice was born to Roy Reid and Olma Stisher Reid on December 15, 1920 in Holly Pond, AL.. Bernice always referred to Holly Pond as the "Garden Spot" of the world. Bernice was an only child. She married John M. Gorham on December 24, 1941, just a few short weeks before John entered the Army. After the War ended they moved to Birmingham, AL. In 1959 John was transferred to Tuscaloosa, AL. Because of failing health, in 2001, John and Bernice moved to Nixa, Mo. to be closer to family. Bernice was preceeded in death by her father and mother, Roy and Olma Reid, husband John M. Gorham and son, Ronald A. Gorham. Bernice was a loving mother, a wonderful wife of 59 years to John, and a true southern lady. Her faith in God, love of family, and love of life gave her a full and rich life. Bernice is survived by her daughter and son in law Marion (Buttons) and Chuck Bowers, Springfield, Mo., grandchildren Will Bowers, Springfield, Mo., Julie Peebles and her husband, Kevin Peebles, Clever, Mo., and daughter-in-law Betty Gorham, Mobile, AL; other grandchildren include Lee and Claudia Gorham, St. Augustine, FLA, Bridgett and Todd Barnes, Richmond, TX, and six great- grandchildren, Logan, Koby and Britany Peebles, Jessica and Tamar Gorham and Hannah Barnes. The family would like to thank the loving caregivers, Sharon Peregrin, Evelyn Groom and the excellent staff of Community Hospices of America. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to Community Hospices of America, 1465 E. Primrose, Springfield, Mo. 65804, or to a charity of the donor's choice. Graveside services will be at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 10, 2008, in the Missouri Veterans Cemetery, under the care of Herman H. Lohmeyer Funeral Home.
