Bernard was born in Clinton, Iowa in May 20, 1918 to mother Hattie Moehr-Hunsberger. In infancy, he was adopted to Sylvester and Maude Burkey from a child's home in Des Moines, Iowa. He passed away at age 88 in their home in Marshfield, Missouri on March 10, 2007
He was a Pearl Harbor Veteran from WWII. He fought at Gudalcanal and Europe until the war ended in 1945. During that time, he married Ruth Frankfurt at Fort Lewis, Washington in 1944.
In 1962, he and his family moved from Silvis, Illinois were he previously worked at John Deere. Upon moving, he worked as a farmer and a carpenter. He retired from Sho-Me power in 1980.
He is preceded in death by his mother, adopted parents, two sisters, three brothers and one half-sister Lois. He is survived by his wife Ruth, one son Steve and Lorrie of Springfield, Missouri, and one daughter Susan and Gene Stone of Marshfield, Missouri. He is also survived by his grandchildren Angela and Tom Ford and great-grandchildren Elizabeth and Dylan of Marshfield, Missouri and Christina and Clint Reininger and great-grandchildren Abby and Noah of Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.
