Barbara Jean (McCubbin) Stow was born in Holstein, Iowa on August 3, 1943. She was the daughter of Robert and Thelma (Hensley) McCubbin. She attended schools in Iowa, Lebanon, Wichita, and Strafford, where she graduated as Salutatorian. She married her high school sweetheart, George E Stow on April 20, 1962. George preceded her in death along with her daughter Wendy Marie, a sister and brother-in-law, Joelle and Ken Fitzke and her parents. Barbara passed on August 23, 2024 with her family around her.
She is survived by her two sons and their wives: Kevin and Katy and Duane and Brenda Stow, all of Strafford. She had five wonderful grandchildren: Matthew and his wife Sarah of Strafford, Kayla and her husband Jim Lile of Childress, Texas, Abby of Strafford and her fiancé Spencer Grosz of Springfield, Zachary and his wife Taylor of Phoenix, Arizona, and Jacob of Strafford. She was also blessed with two great grandchildren: Charlee Brooke and Naomi Jade Lile. She also had a special sister and brother-in-law, Frank and Zoe Ann Huffman of Bossier City, LA; a special brother and sister-in-law, Gene and Pat Stow of Strafford, along with many nieces, nephews, family, and friends.
Barbara started working in the medical field two weeks after graduation. After a 13-year hiatus to raise her family, she went to work at Smith-Glynn Callaway Clinic/St. Johns for 23 years.
Barbara enjoyed traveling, playing cards and games at the Senior Center, family gatherings, watching her grandchildren’s football, basketball and baseball games, watching the granddaughters cheer, attending the Strafford Alumni banquets and catching up with old friends, and attending church at North Star Baptist Church for over 50 years. She was also very proud of her grandsons who served in the military. She was also an avid shopper, both when she could drive herself as well as outings with the Bungalows. She also enjoyed the family trips to the beach when her children were younger. She loved doing crossword puzzles. Her family will miss her homemade beef and noodles. She enjoyed watching the wildlife out her front window from the comfort of her recliner. She loved her sweets, even when we all knew she shouldn’t have them!
Our family would like to thank Mercy for the care and compassion they showed not only to Barbara, but to our family as well. Also, thank you to the staff of The Bungalows at Springfield East for making her stay with you the last year a wonderful one. She definitely enjoyed her time there.
The visitation will be held on August 30, 2024 at Herman Lohmeyer Funeral Home at 9 am. The funeral will be at 10 am followed by the graveside service at Maple Park Cemetery.
