Barbara Lee Killion, 96, a resident of Springfield, MO, and formerly of Licking, MO, passed away on September 3, 2024.
Born in Pyote, TX, to John Harold and Lula Viola (Hudson) Anderson, Barbara was a beloved mother, grandmother, great-
grandmother, and teacher whose life was defined by her deep love for family, education, music, and adventure.
In 1950, Barbara married Fred Keith Killion in Amarillo, TX. Tragically, she became a widow at the age of 40, but with
resilience and strength, she raised their four children on her own, relying solely on her salary as an elementary teacher. Her courage and determination were an inspiration to all who knew her.
Barbara transitioned from city life to the rural countryside when she became a farmer’s wife. She embraced the challenges of farm life, learning to care for a variety of animals, including cows, goats, donkeys, chickens, and pigs. She also had beautiful vegetable gardens and preserved her fruits and vegetables.
Barbara was a lifelong learner and educator. She earned her undergraduate degree from Southern Methodist University and later earned a graduate degree in elementary education from Drury University. Her passion for teaching was evident throughout her many years as a 2nd-grade teacher at Licking Elementary School, where she also taught remedial math later in her career. Barbara’s dedication to education left a lasting mark on her students, children, and grandchildren, all of whom carry forward her love of learning.
Barbara embraced life with enthusiasm and a spirit of adventure. She loved to crochet afghans for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, creating treasured family heirlooms. An avid card player, Barbara’s competitive spirit often led her to victory at the card table. She was also a world traveler, and among her many journeys, her favorite was a trip to Israel and Armenia, which she shared with her son and grandson.
Music was a significant part of Barbara’s life. She found joy in both playing and listening to music, especially when it was performed by her children and grandchildren. Barbara was also deeply involved in her community as a member of the Licking United Methodist Church and the Order of the Eastern Star, where she served as Worthy Matron and Pianist. Faith was an important aspect of Barbara’s life. She was very quiet about her acts of kindness, but it was one way she expressed her love for God.
For the past eleven years, Barbara resided at The Cambridge in Springfield, MO, where she was surrounded by a community that cherished her presence.
Barbara is survived by her children: Kurt (Roseanne) of Springfield, MO; Karl (Jackie) of Farmington, MO; Lou Ann of
Springfield, MO; and Jamie (Kelly) of Campbellsville, KY. She also leaves behind her grandchildren: Branden, Blaine, Kristin, Bryce, Kacey, Jordan, Mollie, and Samuel, as well as 12 great- grandchildren, who affectionately called her Mema. She is fondly remembered by her special niece and nephew, Sheryl (Joel) and Jackie (Diann), both of Amarillo, TX, and her brother-in-law, D.G. (Korky) Killion.
Barbara was preceded in death by her husband, Keith Killion; her parents, John and Lou Anderson; her brother, Jack Anderson; and her grandson, Drew Killion.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday, September 16, at 11:00 a.m. at Licking United Methodist Church in Licking, MO. Burial will be at Oak Dale Cemetery in Houston, MO, beside her husband.
