Barbara Ruth Foster, 85, Lawton, Oklahoma, formerly of Springfield, Missouri, passed away Friday, May 9, 2014 in Cedar Crest Manor, Lawton, Oklahoma. She was born September 1, 1928, in Bonne Terre, Missouri to George and Julia E. Kline Detring.
She returned to school at SMSU at age 45, graduating with a degree in recreational therapy. She served two years in the Peace Corps in Tunis, Tunisia where she assisted in a special education program for children.
She was a member of the Lutheran Church attending Trinity and later Redeemer Lutheran Church. She was an avid golfer and bridge player.
She was preceded in death by her husband Lt. Col. Patrick Foster; her parents; her daughter Laura Foster; grandson Conor Foster; great-grandson Nashoba Foster; sister Patty Brockmiller; and three brothers, Jean, Ray and Paul Detring.
Survivors include her children, Jerry (Carmella) Foster, Port St. Lucie, FL; Vonna (Denny) Kerr, Lawton, OK; Bennie (Linda) Foster; Bob (Joyce) Foster, Springfield, MO; Chuck (Ginger) Foster, Bellingham, WA; 14 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and sister, Charlotte Simms.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Friday, May 16, 2014 at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 2852 S. Dayton, Springfield, Missouri under the care of Herman H. Lohmeyer Funeral Home. Visitation will be before the service from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., also at the church. Burial will follow in Springfield National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to Lost and Found Grief Center. The Foster family has a very special relationship with Lost and Found’s Conor House, named after Barbara’s beloved grandson Conor, who died at age 4.
