Arthur Cornell Garwood was born December 29, 1918, at Afton, Virginia, the firstborn of Frank S. and Nellie Garwood. His career of 20 years in the U. S. Army included service as a medic in the Pacific islands during World War II and several locations afterwards in the U.S. and Europe. On April 28, 1945, he married Margaret Dee in Charleston, South Carolina, where they were both stationed at the time. He retired in 1960 as a Master Sergeant at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. His commitment as a youth to personal faith in Jesus Christ was the underlying foundation of his life on earth.
The family lived for a number of years in Richland, Missouri, and later at Brownfield. Then, in accomplishment of a long-time goal, Arthur and Margaret along with friends T.J. and Ruth Skinner co-founded Fellowship Ranch, still in operation as a riverside Christian retreat for military personnel between Waynesville and Crocker, Missouri. In 1968, the family moved to Grants Pass, Oregon, where Arthur and Margaret served for a number of years at New Hope Christian School. During retirement they served for one year as houseparents at Drewstown House, a Christian boarding school in Ireland. In 2003 they relocated to Nixa, Missouri.
Arthur went peacefully home to the Lord on January 1, 2010, at Christian Health Care of Nixa. He is survived by three sons: Arthur, Jr., and his wife, Charlotte, of Overland Park, Kansas; Jim, of Sisters, Oregon; and David and his wife Rosalie of Red Deer, Alberta, Canada; by three daughters: June Soey and her husband Daryl of Nixa, Missouri; Nellie Bhasme and her husband Ben of Affton, Missouri; and Virginia Castillo and her husband Jack of Port Orchard, Washington; by his sister, Betty Clayton and her husband Sonny of Charlottesville, Virginia; by eleven grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren; and by numerous other relatives and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret; one daughter, Donna Donlan; by his brother James and sister Margaret Cutchins; and by three grandchildren.
