Anna Coleman

Anna Mae Coleman reached the end of her wonderful life on September 4, 2022, at the amazing age of 100.

Born in North Little Rock, AR on February 17, 1922 to James Oliver and Nellie Mae Long. Anna Mae moved to Jackson, TN at a young age and was raised there. She attended St. Cecilia Academy in Nashville, TN where she was Vice-President of her class and graduated in June of 1939. Not long after graduation, Anna Mae caught the eye of Harold Coleman and the two wed in September of 1940.

Harold and Anna Mae moved to Springfield MO in the fall of 1949 and continued to raise their young family. She was a devout Catholic and a member of St. Joseph and St. Agnes Catholic Churches for more than 65 years.

“Mama”, or “Mamaw” to her grandkids was a prolific cook and incorporated her southern roots into many of her recipes. She loved music and would often entertain her family with impromptu dance sessions in her living room. She loved knitting and passed down countless beautiful Afghans and wash cloths to nearly all her family. Lastly, she loved playing card games and would play “Phase 10” or “Skip Bo” with anyone who was willing to lose.

Anna Mae was preceded in death by her parents James and Nellie Mae Long; her husband of 51 years, Harold Coleman; her infant son James Harold; sister Mother Mary Gabriel Long; son-in-law Larry Schell, grand-son Patrick Morrison; grand-daughter Amy Hair; sisters-in-law Ruby and Carlene Long; and brother-in-law, Kenneth Bryant. She is survived by her five children: Mary Ann Schell, of San Antonio, TX; Harriet Morrison and her husband John, of Nixa; Carol Letterman and her husband Fred, of Morrisville; Linda Shaffer and her husband Steve, of Springfield; and Jim Coleman and his wife Vicki, of Springfield. As “sister #1” she is also survived by multiple siblings; brother Charles Long, Rome, GA; sister Martha Bryant, Humboldt, TN; sister Mother Mary Assumpta Long, Ann Arbor, MI; and brother Jim Long, Portland OR.

She is also survived by 16 grandchildren, 35 great-grandchildren, and 18 great-great-grandchildren.

Visitation will take place at 10:00am, Friday, September 9th at St. Agnes Cathedral 533 S Jefferson Ave Springfield, MO 65806.

Funeral mass will be at 10:30 am, Friday, September 9th, at St. Agnes Cathedral 533 S Jefferson Ave Springfield, MO 65806, with Father Mike McDevitt celebrant. Committal services will immediately follow the mass at the Springfield National Cemetery.

Arrangements are under the care and direction of Herman H. Lohmeyer Funeral Home in Springfield, Missouri.
