Obituary for Martha Ann Wise

Martha Ann Wise
Martha Wise was born in St. Francis, Minnesota, on January 29, 1916. Martha passed away under the care of Mercy Hospice on December 17, 2017, at Mercy Hospital in Springfield, Missouri, in the presence of friends.

Martha was one of ten siblings born to Frank and Anna Herbes. Martha graduated from Upsala High School, Upsala, Minnesota, in 1934. After graduation Martha moved to St. Paul, Minnesota, where for a period of time she was employed by Atlas Manufacturing Company and Montgomery Ward.

In 1944 Martha married Hugh Wise of Springfield, Missouri, at which time they traveled to the Philippine Islands to work for the US Government and the United States Navy. They remained there for 27 years. Through social and humanitarian contacts, they became active in local causes, a great deal of which concerned promoting the welfare and educational needs of Philippine children.

Upon retirement they returned to live in Springfield, Missouri, where they again soon became active supporters of The College of the Ozarks and of the Show Me Walkers who support the Children’s Miracle Network relating to the health of children.

Martha was a lady of many talents, homemaker and decorator, cook and baker, entertainer, seamstress, gardener, shopper and ever a special wife, daughter, sister and a loving aunt with a generous heart shared by numerous nieces and nephews. Martha’s many friends will miss her greatly, especially Ray and Dorothy Francois who have helped care for Martha since Hugh’s passing.

Martha was preceded in death by her husband Hugh, who passed in January of 2007, her parents and eight siblings. Martha is survived by one sister, Christine Herbes of Woodbury, Minnesota.

Loving care was given to Martha the last five years of her life at Maple Wood Alzheimer’s Special Care Center in Springfield and from Mercy Hospital and Hospice Care the last several days of her life.

Martha was a longtime member of Immaculate Conception Parish in Springfield. Her funeral mass will be held at Immaculate Conception Church on Wednesday, December 20, 2017, at 11:00 a.m., with Fr. Tom Kiefer celebrant. Visitation will begin one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at the Missouri Veterans Cemetery in Springfield.

Memorial donations may be made to the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church or the Hospice Unit at Mercy Hospital, both in Springfield, Missouri, or a charity of your choice.
