Obituary for Dr. John I. Sisco

Dr. John I. Sisco
Dr. John I. Sisco, 86, of Springfield passed away peacefully August 11, 2017.

A dedicated educator and scholar, John leaves a legacy of colleagues, students and friends who have benefitted richly from his guidance and many kindnesses. Born in Kintyre, North Dakota, John graduated from Valley City State Teacher’s College, Northwestern University (Masters) and the University of Minnesota (Ph.D.). John started his teaching career in the public school system in Minnesota. Thereafter, until his retirement from Missouri State University in 2000, John held both tenured professorships and administrative positions at Bemidji State University, the University of Houston, the University of South Florida and Northern Arizona University. All told, his career in education spanned six decades.

Known for his keen wit and always present humor, John loved his time with family, poker buddies, the gym, and his work partners at P.E.T. (Personal Energy Transportation) in Mt. Vernon, Missouri where he has been a volunteer for many years.

John’s devotions, passions and efforts positively impacted thousands of lives in ways not fully appreciated until this very moment. His unceasing commitment to the betterment of himself and others was expressed in 86 years of action, not idle chatter. Those who knew him are better for the very fact and he will be dearly missed.

John and his loving wife, Glenaris “Glen”, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this very month. In addition to Glen, John is survived by four children and grandchildren: two daughters Jaclyn (Larry) Keough of Columbus, Ohio [Grandchildren: Joel (Emily); Ryan; Kyle; Mary Kate; and Sara]; and Kim Sisco-Morris (Dana) of Ozark [Grandchildren: Logan Sisco and Livia Jo Morris]; and his two sons Dale (Julie) [Grandchildren: Stephanie and Thomas]; and Paul (Michelle) [Grandchildren: John and Sophia] both of Tampa, Florida. John’s family was extended to include S.Y. Wong, his wife, Lee, and their daughter, Janey.

A funeral mass will be held at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 3555 South Fremont Ave., Springfield, MO. 65804 at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 19, 2017. In lieu of flowers, the Sisco Family asks you to consider donations to P.E.T. of Southwest Missouri, 16382 Lawrence 1180, Aurora MO. 65605-6965 or Immaculate Conception Church.

A private interment will take place at a later date in the Missouri Veteran's Cemetery just South of Springfield, Missouri.
