Obituary for Edward Joseph Farrell

Edward Joseph Farrell
Edward Joseph Farrell, 92, passed away May 4th after a long, unique life. He is preceded in death by his brother and long-time companion and apartment mate, William (“Billy”) Paul Farrell. They were from a family of six boys and then six girls. He was unaware if any of his siblings are still alive.

Ed was born July 22, 1923 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to parents, James and Margaret Farrell. He was an army veteran of WWII in Europe. Most of the first half of his adult life following WWII, many of those years with his brother, was spent moving across the country, working frequently for hotels as help of various kinds. Having been good reliable workers, they were frequently welcomed back if they wished after they had “pushed on,” either by Greyhound bus or “riding the rails,” though they never got to ride the “cushions.” Once, he and his brother were elevator operators in the Empire State Building.

Later on the brothers made Springfield their home, working for C. Arch Bay and Co. until their retirements. Ed and Billy are both affectionately remembered by many downtown residents and were well known in several pubs. He loved to tell stories of his life as well as parables from the Bible and lives of the saints, and was especially thankful that he lived to see Pope John Paul II canonized. Ed is also remembered strongly by his close friends of the last ten years, John Appleton and Christina Biava. Thanks should be given to the people of Jordan Creek Nursing and Rehab, Preferred Hospice, Sister Elizabeth Ann Weiler, and C. Arch Bay and Co. for their kindness towards Ed. During the year he was at Jordan Creek, he brought pleasure to many people.

Ed was a life-long and devout Catholic and long-time member of St Agnes Cathedral Parish. A funeral service, (Mass) will be celebrated at St. Agnes Chapel, 10 am Wednesday May 11th followed by burial in Resurrection Cemetery
