Obituary for Richard "Rick" Flory

Richard "Rick" Flory
Richard “Rick” McClellan Flory, 65, of Springfield, Missouri, passed away at his home on February 18, 2018. Rick’s death was from accidental causes secondary to a Traumatic brain injury.

Rick was born on January 25, 1953, to Richard Kent and Joan McClellan Flory in Miami, Florida. After moves to Tennessee and Arkansas, the family relocated to Springfield, Missouri where Rick‘s father was employed with the Union National Bank.

Rick attended Glendale high school, graduating in 1971, forever leaving his memory there.
Rick designed Glendale high school’s first and remaining School Crest during his sophomore year. His design was selected from more than 30 applications and is composed in the traditional colors of red and blue which stand for the courage and truth of the falcon, the Glendale mascot. Among other features in the crest, the quill and scroll represent scholarship, the torch represents knowledge and eternal truth, the scale symbolizes honesty, and the star, new horizons.

Rick was a gifted and talented artist creating primarily portraits of family, friends and clients. Following his graduation from Glendale, Rick studied at SMS, relocating to Omaha, Nebraska in the early 80s. There he obtained his commercial pilots license and was employed as a pilot for Braniff Airlines.

Following his employment with Braniff, Rick moved to Colorado where he continued to enjoy his artistic endeavors and became an accomplished carpenter and craftsman. Rick’s son, Justin, still lives in Denver, Colorado.

Rick moved back to Springfield several years ago primarily to be close to his lifelong friends. He was employed in restaurant service, followed by part-time employment with a local grocery store. Rick spoke often of how much he truly enjoyed working there, how wonderful he was treated, the joy of interacting with the customers and the excitement of reconnecting with old friends from high school.

Rick is survived by his son, Justin Flory, of Denver, Colorado and grandson, Xavier. He is also survived by his mother, Joan Flory, of Omaha Nebraska, sister Pamela, of Omaha, and brother, Steve, of Fort Worth, Texas. Surviving nieces and nephew are Melissa, Steve’s daughter, of Fort Worth, Texas and Pamela’s children: Robert, of Dallas, Texas; Kristin of Manhattan Beach, California; and Lauren of Omaha.
Rick is pre-deceased by his father, Richard Flory.

The family would like to express our gratitude to those who were so loving and generous of their time with Rick. He wrote of you often and we are very appreciative of all you did for him, and for staying in touch with us. Ricks laughter, generous spirit and loving soul are dearly missed. “Jesus wept,” John 11:35. As do we.

May Rick rest in his loving arms forever.
