Obituary for Elston H Hill
Elston Harold Hill, age 88, of Springfield, MO passed away at Mercy Hospital on Friday, October 6, 2017. Elston was born July 29, 1929 in Clear Lake, IA to Clarence and Violet Hill. He married Barbara Joan O'Riley on April 24, 1954. They were married for sixty-one years until Barbara's passing in 2015. Together they raised six children in Ridgewood, NJ.
Elston was an Army veteran, having served active duty from July, 1948 to July, 1949 and Army Reserves from July, 1949 to July, 1956. Following graduation from high school in 1947, Elston went to Washington D.C. and worked as a clerk for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). After serving a year of active duty in the Army, he returned to work for the FBI. In 1951, he was transferred to San Francisco and was promoted to Defense Reviewer and Special Searcher. While in San Francisco, he completed a degree in history and political science at the University of San Francisco. In June, 1954, he took the oath of office to become a Special Agent for the FBI. He worked as an agent in the Milwaukee field office for one year before being transferred to the New York City field office where he worked for the remainder of his career until retiring in January, 1980. During his tenure at the New York office, Elston was promoted to Special Agent in Charge. Throughout his 31 year career, Elston was recognized for his dedication to the FBI's mission to protect and defend the United States.
In his retirement, Elston served as Vice President of the Springfield Library Board of Trustees and was instrumental in the 1999 opening of the new Library Center. He was an active member of The American Legion, The Elks and The Society of Former Special Agents of The FBI.
In addition to his parents, Elston is preceded in death by his wife, Barbara, son, Brian, brother Verne and sisters Edna and GleeBelle. He is survived by his children Doris (Doug) Hicks of Frisco, NC, Betsy (Dave) Schoeller of Ames, IA, Maryellen Boberg (Bruce Corse) of Las Cruces, NM, Luke (Waltraud) Hill of Carthage, MO, Margaret (Ron) Milkas of Georgia, daughter-in-law, Mary Ellen (Brown) Hill of Flemington, NJ, nineteen grandchildren and ten great grand children. Two sisters Marguerite Hofland, Gerri & George Klessel.
Visitation will be Monday, October 9 from 6 to 8 PM with a prayer service at 7:15 PM at Herman H. Lohmeyer Funeral Home, 500 East Walnut St. In Springfield. Funeral mass will be Tuesday, October 10 at 1:00 PM at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 3555 South Fremont in Springfield with burial to follow at White Chapel Memorial Gardens.
